Hudson’s confidence level slipped several notches as he followed Keller back through the portal.

Nothing like a supernatural experience to humble you a little, he thought.

Joiner walked right behind him leaving Hudson, the only one among the trio who could not follow the Ways on his own, in their middle. The fact that he stumbled around, unable to navigate the passage unaided, made him feel like the odd man out.

Mark and a party of six young men had accompanied the group to the portal. The Marines left the panzer behind, along with all the weapons taken from the tank crew.

If nothing else, Hudson thought, Mark and McKenzie’s group are better armed now than they were before.

McKenzie stayed behind at the campsite. She rarely participated in outings, anyway. Keller had wondered if she could see their future, and if this mission would be successful or not. Hudson listened as she asked the girl about it before they left.

McKenzie had frowned and said, “It’s confusing. I see . . . multiple possible outcomes, some good, some bad. I’ve never sensed that many before. I think when you go through, it affects my abilities.”

Those words did not inspire confidence. Keller thanked her anyway and hugged her before leaving.

At the portal, the two groups said goodbye. All three Marines shook hands with Mark and the other boys, who then stepped back to watch.

One by one the adults walked through, stepping into the floating emerald.

The kaleidoscopic assault on Hudson’s senses left him disoriented once more. But he had now gone back and forth between worlds on over a dozen separate trips, so it no longer freaked him out. Instead, he kept his focus on Keller’s back and simply followed her.

He turned once to glance at Joiner, but the man seemed to be having no difficulties.

At last Keller turned from the passageway. One of the accordion-like doorways stretched wide to accommodate her. She seemed to step through a vertical sheet of water, plopping out onto a deck not unlike the one they just left. Hudson and Joiner walked out right behind her.

Two men shouted and scrambled backward. A third near a groundcar stared at them, bug-eyed.

Hudson noticed the rank of Q1 on the sleeves of the two closest to the portal. The man in the car looked like a civilian. Based on recent experience, Hudson guessed the driver was a deputy sheriff.

The two Qs snapped a salute when they saw the insignia on Keller’s shoulders.

She said, “At ease. We need to use your car, and we need to get to the Star Deck ASAP.”

“I’m also gonna need that communicator you’ve got,” Hudson said, pointing down to the wrist unit one of the officers wore.

This man looked at Keller, questioningly. She nodded.

“Give it to him. We’ll leave it behind at the MTS.”

The trio climbed in the car and the deputy drove off, leaving the two science officers behind. It all happened so fast they were speechless. Hudson gave them a final look, and noted one still had his mouth open.
